I have many thoughts and feelings about the douchebag in Chicago, I'm going to share them here. It'll be lengthy so settle in if you care. First off and most importantly, I want to thank every single person, comic fan and pro, friends who have contacted me and expressed support. I want you to know that I get it. I get it that it's not about my work, that it's about respect for us as a comic book fraternity/sorority. By virtue of all that we do we are connected and when we attend shows we do so with the best and highest expectations, always cautious tho. As comic pros we have all experienced anxiety about appearing in public. I'm a cartoonist, not a broadcaster or inspirational speaker. One of my peers, Scott Kurtz, he of Player vs. Player expressed that he gets anxiety attending Comic con and its large crowds. We all do. So when we attend and interact with fans we try and put on the best face and give respect to all of the people that choose to greet us.

When douchebag approached me at the opening of the doors for the early birds on Saturday, my instinct kicked in and as he expressed that he was a fan of Captain America, I knew what was coming and had already determined that i would not react. To be honest, I cannot act when I'm insulted. I appreciate all the sentiments from peers that had this idiot approached other fans he would have met a different fate perhaps a harshe, more aggressive fate, but in the moment that you get physical / lose your cool, then you become Ron Artest attacking fans.

Had I gotten more aggressive and so much as touched this fool, then I lose. Big time. It's not worth it. And as my fellow artist buddy who was with me, Marat Mychaels can tell you, on both attempts to incite me, I said "we're being filmed". That's the downside this social network age that we all enjoy provides, the video option. Video pranks are a constant opportunity to catch all of us at the worst possible moment. So realize that you could always be a victim of a prank. From Jackass to Borat to Bruno the gauntlet
has been dropped. Our industry is ripe to pick on. We are so very accessible to any nut case that is unhappy with a storyline or artistic choice that an artist has made. My opinion of this idiot is that he was always doing this as performance, I mean the first time the camera wasn't exactly hidden as his buddy stood to the far side of him. So,again, I just caution any and all that it is sometimes the better choice to just walk away from the conflict. Don't give the provocateur what he is seeking. Yes, he was seeking to embarrass me and it was up to me to limit his pleasure. My friend Eddy, who attends almost every show, said it clearly that I had gotten into this guy's dome by not cooperating with him the first go around. So in order to give him his satisfaction, he went to the next level and dropped the bag.

My concern is that by attempting this complete fail to grow half a nut that it will provoke another to fulfill what he failed and take it to another level. But, that won't stop me from attending shows as I always have. Too much focus has been on the embarrassing actions of 1 nut I sign thousands of books at these shows and it would be a crime to punish the people that enjoy the work I do because one person chose to act like an ass. I've committed to shows throughout the next year and look forward to meeting gracious and enthusiastic fans in each city. But I will give fair warning to anyone who tries anything to me when I'm in the presence of my family. That will not end well. I bring my family to shows because my kids absolutely adore comic shows. They love the toys, comics, costumes, Comic-Con is eagerly awaited. by my kids every year and they deserve a great experience. They won't understand why some creep attempts to upset their Dad.

And yes, in 22 years that I've had the good fortune of working in this wonderful business, this is the first time an "incident" has occured.
