HERE YOU CAN DISCUSS THE COMIC BOOKS YOU'VE RECENTLY READ

dgreatone321 писал(а):Quick comments on the releases for this week:

JLA: Lost Generation #1 - It was a good set-up issue for a year-long series. I liked that they did not regressed Booster's personality to the Bwaa-hahahahaha era....Max Lord is one cool villain here....though i miss the old Max Lord from JLI....

War of the Supermen #2 - i have a bad feeling about the direction of this story arc....we are gonna end up with a lots of deaths....

Batman 699 - too cramped and rushed....i would have wanted this story arc to be 4 issues long...there is more to the Riddler than meets the Eye

Birds of Prey v2 #1 - I like the BOP....and man HELENA is HOT!!!!!!!!! Same with Barbara.....No wonder Dick Grayson fell for these girls. Though i wish they include Manhunter in the group.

Seige #4 - hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............is Loki truly dead here?????? Goodbye Sentry....your character had potential....writers just didnt know how to use you properly.....one good character WASTED again

Siege 4 - This was a huge let down. Like most of the Marvel "events", it ended with a whimper. Good riddence to the Sentry though. :)

New Mutants 13 - And now The Vanisher is dead. Just how many of the dwindling mutants can die out until they're all gone? Has anyone been counting how many are left? 150? 140?

X-Men - Apocalypse vs Dracula 01 - Funny idea having these 2 meet and, eventually I suspect, square-off. A good start to a 4 part mini-series.

The Walking Dead 44 - The townies finally attack the prison and are driven off; Rick getting gut-shot in the process. Definately not a world I'd care to live in.

X-Force - vol.3 #19 - In Spain are a little less numbers in the street than in USA, but in the case... I think in this comic Laura (X23) comes to the maximum, it is amazing what she can do with one arm ... lethal, destructive and above is a pretty girl!!

Astonishing X-Men - vol3 #2 - With the second chapter of the first and dramatic arc written by Warren Ellis. The X-Men has a great mystery to solve: the killing of those who thought it was a mutant unknown, but has resulted in something much stranger. Warren Ellis is genial... but this serie I think is turning in something too much complicated.

Ghost Rider - Road to Hell - Simply Awesome, the Ghost Rider has return with renovated efforts. This is a story of devils and tormentad souls with a drawing that makes you feel like the worst horror movie.

Aphrodite IX - Publicated in Spain the last month... a series with a good drawing, but I think that David Wohl & David Finch don´t think too much about the story, they only think about the girl and their miniskirts.

X-Men - Infernus - The return of Illyana Nikolaevna Rasputin, Magik a girl with a bad temper (is no longer the old snowflake). Again witnessing a fight in hell that it can be considered the second part of a little serie called Inferno.

Haunt #05 - Since Spawn I never read comics that impact so much like this.... blood, monsters, and guns, the perfect combination.

Grimm Fairy Tales - Neverland #02 - Another twist of the zenescope, in this case is about giving all around the world and never ever go back to all the characters in diabolical beings ... a good idea but I'm not convinced.

Resident Evil #04 - More zombies, for the group of Sugarman and Gere, a good design for a comic about zombies hunt and search for truth.

Aliens vs. Predator: Three World War #04 - It´s the final of the world... Aliens, colonial marines and predators, the mos awesome combination of characters in a comic... who can survive??, the humans has the minor opportunities... :P

I wanted to reply on your Sentry comment. I agree and am happy that he is gone. I always felt that Marvel made him in haste and as an answer to DC's Superman. He never really fit well into the Marvel Universe (in my opinion) and I am glad that he has been removed. I never liked that he was originally this all powerful guy from way back and he saved the world and no one remembered him b/c of a mass memory wipe. It was just too forced upon the readers and wedged too much into the already establsihed Marvel universe.

As for Apocalypse vs. Dracula. To me, this is a very unlikely pairing. I guess I couldn't get over this odd pairing, so maybe that is why I did not enjoy the first issue. Perhaps you or someone else has a better insight to this than me and can tell me why it is a good comic. Perhaps I'll give it a second try then.

The Walking Dead is my favorite comic right now. You are still behind if you are only on issue #44, but it is a great read. I would discuss more, but I do not want to ruin any surprises for you. Keep reading and I hope to have many discussions in the future about this series with you.

Green Hornet Comics

Is anyone else reading these comics? I am thoroughly enjoying Kevin Smith's story that was to be the Green hornet movie a couple years back. It reads and feels like a movie and could have been lots of fun if they had filmed it this way.

I am also enjoying the other Green Hornet titles, like Kato and the telling of his Origins. It is cool to get the background story to a character like that. I also have enjoyed the artwork, too. If any one else is reading them, I'd love to discuss some plot points. If not, I recommend you guys read them, as they are good books at the moment.

Secret Avengers #1

Hell yeah. Great 1st issue, great nth issue. Brubaker had some experience with in showing how to run a team in Uncanny X-Men, with mixed success, and in Captain America - Reborn, better but still with mixed success, but he nailed it this time. First off its worth noting how in some Death of Captain America story arc (Captain America 25-41) Brubaker, whilst concentrating on Bucky essentially ran a team book, moving Bucky, Falcon, Sharon Carter, Black Widow and Tony Stark all over the place. Secret Avengers is a huge expansion of that. You have the primary strike team - Rogers, Black Widow, Valkyrie (a little random, but I won't complain). You have a second away team - Ant-Man and Moon Knight, which are the more stealthy unit. You have the Behind-the-Lines unit - Beast, War Machine (who is Iron Man-esque) and Sharon Carter. The only new, eh, "character class", if you like, is the all-purpose powerhouse - Nova.

I would like to praise Brubaker here because whilst Nova only appeared briefly he was written exactly as he should be. The interactions with the Worldmind were perfectly scripted. (At least i think so). I was a little worried seeing as the only ones who really written Nova since 2007 were DnA, but Bru here is not bringing the standard down.

The way the plot goes is somewhat reminiscent of Secret Warriors just over a year ago. This is a good thing, by the way. You have a similar kind of espionage/superhero/mystery going here. I have never heard of Serpent Crown before this issue, something I will correct in future.... maybe.

The art was good. Deodato's art fits this perfectly for the same reason it fitted Dark Avengers earlier. Can't say much more.

4 / 5

Now, as Newsarama calls them, pellet reviews:

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #2:
Just WTF?! I may hurt some people's feelings here, and I generally refrain from reviewing things that I am too critical about, and voicing bad opinions. I genuinely dislike Frazer Irving's art. I believe if Sprouse or any of the recent Batman&Robin artists (even Philip Tan) drew it, I would actually understand the comic better. I got constantly mixed up between Mordecai and Nathaniel, and that I believe is the crucial part of the Puritan Era story. I am used to Morrison's imaginative and weird and hard-to-understand writing and ideas and all that shebang, but the good thing is that he usually is accompanied by artist who can draw things clearly. Irving however compounds the problem of udnerstanding what the hell is goind on by his unique style (you may notice I refrain from using the words like bad, awful, god-awful etc.). The actual plotline was pretty cool though, though Grant could probably make some effort on differentiating between the four superheroes at the Vanishing Point, cos' it might as well be just the one guy with all their abilities thinking out loud.
Art: 1 / 5 Story: 3.5 / 5

X-Force #27:
Well the first 10 pages or so had no words, so that is a bit annoying. Also Choi & Oback are the better X-Force artists, but in my opinion whilst ground battles between X-Force members and various soldiers/ressurected mutants/whatever else would look pretty cool, in this issue fighting lots of flying robots doesn't quite work with their style. But the second half is pretty good though, as in We finally move in to the last act of the story, and whilst the last few issues were a bit slow, it looks like its picking up now.
3.5 / 5

Hellblazer #251-253
Oh yeah, and i just stated reading Pete Milligan's run on Hellblazer. The only other issues I have read that ever featured Constantine were Hellblazer #1-2 and one of the early Sandman issues, so I had no idea what was going on in there, but it was pretty damn good. The relationship with Phoebe against which the main story was written was portrayed rather interestingly; a normal regular sane person would have probably left him. The constant criticising of British politics especially considering what's going on here (i.e. in England) now is amusing and quirky, and I have to admit that the no-holds on the language that is everpresent in Vertigo books is really liberating after reading so many mainstream comics where writers censor their characters' language. Maybe its because of the dark gritty cynicism or the main character or the rather amusing and interesting take on the supporting cast, but I rather like it.
3.5 / 5

I'm starting to have an interest with Secret Avengers. Personally, it's a new direction for an Avengers team. Espionage and covert missions is a new take for an Avengers team. Hopefully, it gets more interesting along the way. The art of Deodato is really gud in this book.

Hi everyone! I'm new.

I’ve just finished reading Mark Millar’s miniseries, Superman: Red Son. I know it's not new, but I've been into reading older miniseries lately.

It’s part of DC comics “Else Worlds” comic book line and has an alternate Superman history and Earth history. It's a what if scenario in which Superman lands on Earth in 1950s Soviet Russia instead of Kansas USA -- and it's really a brilliant concept.

This is probably my favorite Mark Millar comic I've read so far. Don't get me wrong, his comics that aren't constrained by the moral rules of DC and Superman are fine for the most part, but the combination of the rigid Superman/DC Comics storyline for whatever reason lead to much better story telling from Millar.

I love alternate histories, like the one in Watchmen. Like Watchmen, Superman: Red Son has an alternate world history. Unlike Watchmen, it's not characters made up for the miniseries (even if Alan Moore based them on old Charlton comics characters). This miniseries shows us all sorts of really cool alternate versions of familiar DC Universe characters.

The cast includes - Superman - Loyal to Russia and later to become the Leader of the Soviet Union, Lex Luther - a complex character not completely good or evil but trying to bring the USA back out of collapse, Lois (Lane) Luthor - still a reporter but married to Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olson - a Head of the CIA, Wonder Woman - an alternate take on her in which she takes Superman's side, and a really cool Russian Batman - who is a revolutionary.

There are many other DC Universe alternate versions here too, Brainiac, Green Lantern, a Bizarro created by Luther that is Frankenstein's monster-type clone of Superman, even a non-Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) has a small cameo.

All in all, this is so far one of the best in this genre of comics. If you haven't read it, I recommend searching the internet for it.

Thanks for reading this, hope I've interested someone into reading it :)

Hi again,

Here comes another supersonicjerkoff comic book review!!

I’ve just finished reading another Mark Millar miniseries, This Time around I read Wanted.

I'm finding the more of Millar's work I read the more hit and miss he is. I like I said in my other post, I loved Superman: Red Son -- but Wanted is just, well - silly. Some of you may disagree, but it seemed contrived and like an old-man who is out of touch wrote it.

It barely resembles the movie, which is a good thing because the movie isn't very good.. Bad news it wasn't much better.

It had some interesting side characters like "Fuckwit" a Bizarro-esque character and "Shithead" a villain made of the feces of the 666 most evil men on Earth, but the main characters were unlikable. The main character is a whiny selfish murderer that's illustrated to look like Eminem. He doesn't learn or grow in any way at all. There are no interesting plot twists or revelations and the whole comic series felt fake and forced.

The concept of the comic sounds great; the super villains banded together in 1986 and completely wiped out all the superheroes. They then erased from the world memory all existence of super beings. So no one on Earth but he super villains even know there ever was super people. Sounds interesting right? It's not. It just doesn't go anywhere.

I'm glad I read it. And I'll give Millar some more chances since I loved the Superman Elseworlds as much as I did. I hope is other work is better.

Thanks for reading this

I've just started reading Brian Azzarello's 100 Bullets and loving it so far. However, I am wondering if I should buy Alan Moore's The Swamp Thing. Also the Transmetropolitan Books are very scarce in India. :-(So far I just got two.

I’ve just finished reading another old comic book miniseries. This time I just finished reading Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s “Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot”.

The comic has the really beautiful lush art of Darrow with a great retro design for the two main characters and a silly & fun storyline that’s heavy in satire and goofy dialog by Miller. It’s about an American Iron Man—like character (The Big Guy) that teams up with a Japanese Astro Boy—like (Rusty the Boy Robot) character who must battle an intelligent and all consuming Godzilla-esque monster that is trying to take over the Earth by mutating humans into dinosaur-like creatures.

This comic takes itself very lightly but is heavy on satire and seems to have some critiques on society and our modern world. It also pokes fun at old Stan Lee alliteration and shows the Asro Boy-esque character as a useless silly parody.

I really loved and enjoyed this comic! If you like robots, giant Japanese monsters or cool retro armored suits — grab a copy, you should enjoy it too.

Yeah, I really like Millar's and Romita's Kick-Ass comic too. Sadly, everything that made it fun and surprising they took out of the movie. Hollywood is great sometimes (The Dark Knight, Iron Man) and just sucks ass sometimes (Kick-Ass, Ghost Rider) oh well :(

I've recently been reading the "Reckoning" story arc from Wolverine. Daniel Way is looking to be a promising writer for Marvel. I'm not a big fan of the art of Wolverine: Origins but Dark Wolverine is pretty good. I've also been following the new "Avengers" titles. To be honest, I'm a little skeptical about the whole "Heroic Age" thing but I think Steve Rogers being the new top cop in the Marvel U has some promising storylines to spawn.

On the DC Side of things, I've never really followed a title since Final Crisis but I'm hoping the Return of Bruce Wayne will reignite my interest in the Bat-titles. Nothing against Dick Grayson but Bruce Wayne IS Batman. There can be no other.

Ok no concrete opinions on this yet, I'm only half way through the six issue mini series. I'm reading is the six issue miniseries Doc Frankenstein.

The created by credits are Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce with the artwork by Skroce and written by the Matrix creators the Wachoski Bros. It's also published by the Wachoski Bros comic book company Burlyman Entertainment.

It's basically the Mary Shelly Frankenstein’s monster character. It's sort of an alternate take on him where he becomes a gun fighter in the old West, a World War 2 soldier and several other professions though out the years.

The art is okay, not bad, not great. The story is okay, again not bad, not great. I'm hoping it picks up a bit. So far after 3 issues, I can tell you I would like it more if it were less preachy and had harder edged action. Who knows maybe it will kick into overdrive before it's over.

Thank guys,

Right, these aren't new releases but without doubt stories that really want reading:

Annihilation #1-6
Now this is the granddaddy of all the current marvel cosmic events. The last ones leading up to it were various Inifinity storylines, and I've personally never read them. Whilst i do not doubt they are good, I thought that the arcs were too convoluted and to fully appreciate them I would have to go quite farback, and I wasn't quite prepared for that. Annihilation kinda turns over a new leaf on cosmic marvel universe. Thanos #7-12 and Drax the Destroyer #1-4 kinda acted as lead-ins to Annihilation but are certainly not neccessary, so when Annihilation kicks off it just starts. There is the prologue one-shot and four 4-issue mini-series showcasing various characters involved. Of particular importance are the Silver Surfer and the Nova limited series. The former really expands on the mythology of the Marvel Cosmos and is written by the main event writer Keith Giffen; the latter is about Richard Rider a.k.a. Nova, and was apaprently so good that they gave him an on-going after the event's conclusion.

Now for the series itself. It is narrated primarily by Nova, with Thanos and Drax filling in the blanks. I think I treated the storyline primarily as a Nova storyline, because I really loved how the writers pimped him up, transforming him from an inexperienced "New Warriors"-era character to basically a resistance army general, if you like. One of the most memorable battles I have seen in a long time happened in issue #6 and ended with Nova ripping Annihilus' heart out of his throat.]. Giffen gives a really epic feel to this. WHilst DnA managed to carry on rather with their own events since, I do often wish that Giffen would return to cosmic marvel U.

As for the art, Divito wasn't particularly showy like some artists who have since tackled cosmic marvel since, but that's not really a bad thing. The story is about a war, and that means tons of various characters portrayed side by side, and it helps when you can differentiate between them at all times. Divito accomplishes that quite well, especially considering how many different characters he has to oftern draw side by side.

Detective Comics #858-860

Greg Rucka's second Batwoman arc in Detective Comics, finally giving us the origin of Batwoman. Now first I would like to point out that whilst the general populace of the internet seems to find JHWilliams' artwork to be the better part of the story, I would disagree. Yes the art is great, and Williams' style is certainly different, original, maybe even at times phenomenal. However, in this arc its the talk between Kate and her dad and her meeting with Batman that really touched me. It was a great origin story whilst slowly carrying on the main plotline forwards, following up from the previous arc.
